ABOUT US | Story of Lumi

The story of Lumi is unlike any other. First and foremost it is a love story of two people, from two different continents. Katri, from Finland, and Nacho from Mexico who ended up together against all odds and started a family business together.

It all started in the summer of 2015 when a young Finnish woman moved to Baja California after the love of her life…

Our story

Katri Rantala│ October 2018

Katri’ family wanted to see where she was living and so on Christmas of the same year Katri moved to Mexico, her entire family came on a vacation. Let’s read how she describes the beginning of it all…

I know this will all sound a bit too much like a Netflix Christmas movie, but it is all true.

Part of my family’s vacation was dedicated to the famous Wine Valley, Valle de Guadalupe. This felt natural, because my entire family loves food and wine just as much as I do, so I absolutely wanted to show them this beautiful region I had fell in love with.

The first night after a delicious dinner and some wine we all started to play with the idea of having our own little hotel in the Valley. At that very night we thought of a name that is easy to pronounce and represents something very Finnish to us: Lumi – snow.

Soon after my family travelled back to Finland, Nacho and I started to look for the ideal spot to build our dream. We knew early on that we’d like to build the rooms in shipping containers because we saw so much of them unused in Ensenada. Recycling felt like great idea.

The container rooms definitely did not get finished overnight, instead the whole project was a long and rocky road with many learning moments. Finally we opened our doors in November 2018. We started with 6 container rooms, a Finnish sauna with its outdoor Jacuzzi, and a reception. In the following years we added four more rooms and  a glamping area.

We decided to build the cabins by recycling shipping containers. We liked the idea that they’ve travelled all over the world and now get to have a new life in the middle of Mexican vineyards. Want to see how they turned out? See our rooms here.

Our love for family, pets and nature is reflected in the service and facilities we offer. We want our guests to have an authentic and different experience with us, and make unforgettable memories in the same way that we did a few years ago.

In order to guarantee the best possible service me and my husband built our house on the same land, and for five years we lived right there. Our kids grew, like they tend to do, so in 2023 we decided to move to Finland for all four of them to have different education opportunities, but we were lucky enough to have Nacho’s parents stay in Lumi and take care of our dream together with the Lumi team.
